File Compression and Reorganization Utilities
CPRESS is a file compression / expansion utility for any ENSCRIBE file.
ALL ENSCRIBE file attributes are retained in the compressed files,
including: file ownership, security, modification times, key parameters,
and alternate key parameters. This utility is particularly useful
for compressing infreqently used files or files to be archived,
in order to conserve space on the recording medium (e.g., tape,
disc). It is also useful for distributing large files across a network
to reduce transmission times. Compression ratios as 10:1 (90%) can
be achieved using CPRESS.
EPRESS is a compression utility for EDIT files. The compressed file
remains compatible with the EDIT format. EPRESS removes unallocated
and deallocatable extents as well as dead space from EDIT files.
Extents are reassigned so that most EDIT files fit into a single,
full extent with one or no unallocated pages. EPRESS retains
file ownership, security, and (optionally) modification date. It
may be used to compress an EDIT file without changing the "last
modified" timestamp.
XPRESS is an extent reorganization tool. Highly fragmented files can
be reorganized with more efficient extent allocation. Files with
large numbers of unallocated pages in primary extents can be reorganized
with smaller extent sizes. XPRESS retains all ENSCRIBE file
attributes.
